#02 - To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Somehow, through my years of schooling, this book has never made it to my required readings list. Which is why I’ve only just read it. And I’m mighty glad that I did.
A child sees her father’s struggle to defend a black man charged with the rape of a white girl, in a society steeped in discrimination and filled with oddities of all sorts. I loved how vividly the characters are portrayed: Strong-willed Scout; Jem, whose disposition changes as frequently as the seasons; and the upright, good-natured Atticus Finch, wise beyond his years. The issues of prejudice and injustice this book deals with are heartfelt and strike close to home. Granted, there are parts I don’t quite understand (why the inclusion of Dill? And what exactly happened to Boo Radley?) and I can’t spot metaphors well enough, but there’s always SparkNotes :D
A lively, easygoing and oftentimes amusing read, I think To Kill a Mockingbird has just become one of my all-time favourites. (Shall get the movie someday!)
