The Tao of Dana: listening to people's problems -
“I have to be there for them.” Thats the common way its phrased when you openup your ears to the multitude of problems people in your life wish to unload upon you. You know what? Listening to problems does not help them get solved. In fact, it does a big disservice to the people you are “listening to” because it just gives them an oppotunity to make their problems bigger and more dramatic by reteling the story and embellishing it for all its worth.
If you want to help people, stop them mid-stream in complaining and ask if they want solutions. Can they think of any? If yes, then carry on and come up with actions if you feel that’s appropriate. If not, please excuse yourself from the conversation.
Why? That load of poison negativity with no desire for resolution just brings you down. Why put yourself through that???
