At the heart of the American obsession with the Ivy League is the belief that schools like Harvard provide the social and intellectual equivalent of Marine Corps basic training—that being taught by all those brilliant professors and meeting all those other motivated students and getting a degree with that powerful name on it will confer advantages that no local state university can...

i keep my distance but you still catch my eye.
i don’t usually celebrate christmas (which explains the very mood-inappropriate stark-style greeting); in fact in the 18 years i’ve been around i only recall doing something christmas-y once, maybe twice? and this time round there’s definitely no reprieve (kudos, common app, you stole christmas for me), but i guess i’ll feel better writing essays than wasting away like i...

Old Kim kicked the bucket?
(From Wikipedia) “It was reported on North Korean state television on December 19, 2011 that Kim Jong-il had died in Pyongyang. The tearful presenter announced that he had died two days earlier of “physical and mental over-work”. *Edit: Original source can be found here. By this logic I should have died ages ago.

insomnia
i spent most of last night reading pride and prejudice instead of sleeping. sleep should be coming naturally to me at this point in time - i have close to nothing to do in my life. yet cornell chose to send me the ED decisions account and password last night. already a bunch of nerves about the impending results, i spent my scant sleeping hours alternating between dreaming about the admissions...
